THE TOP 20
17 HIGHVELD STEEL

Total score: 59; Historic score: 23; FM's score: 36

In the first half of 2008 the company had its best-ever headline earnings rise in any six-month period. They increased from R644m to R1,2bn in 2008. The improvement was mainly due to significant price increases on both steel and vanadium products. Those prices have come off since. In May this year Highveld said its main business risks remain "depressed markets with very low orders for steel products as well as declining steel prices."
