Whitey Basson's obsession with offering customer value is paying off
THE TOP 20
13 SHOPRITE

Total score: 63; Historic score: 17; FM's score: 46

Like fellow retailers Truworths, Woolworths and Massmart, Shoprite holds no net borrowings and has still been showing double-digit earnings growth. These companies will gain from falling interest rates, but are still facing tough conditions. CEO Whitey Basson has grown market share through his relentless and legendary focus on offering the customer value and cutting costs. There is still considerable growth potential in the rest of Africa.
