8 METAIR

Total score: 59,5 Historic score: 39,2 FM's score: 73

When Toyota SA announced recently that it would be building 46 000 Hilux innovative international multipurpose vehicles this year, of which 18 000 were destined for export, mainly to Europe, not much attention was cast Metair's way. But such a huge project - expected to generate R120bn for Toyota SA in eight years - will have a big contribution from Metair. As a subsidiary of Wesco, which controls Toyota SA, Metair contributes most of the components that make up Toyota vehicles on local roads and neighbouring states. Metair is doing well at present, but it could be squeezed by cheap imports.
