SA's Top 20 Companies

20 ABSA

Total score: 53,9 Historic score: 23,7 FM's score: 74

The share price was boosted by news of the Barclays bid, but there was also solid organic performance. Asset growth was beaten only by Standard Bank - impressive, considering that Absa's aged books mean it has to run fast just to stay in the same place. Post-takeover, Absa should be a more well-rounded bank, better at investment banking and with a strong franchise across Africa. Any acquisition carries risk, but the Barclays deal looks set to add much value.
