9 NETCARE

Total score: 56,5 Historic score: 31 FM's score: 73

Listed in 1996 with just six hospitals and a value of R300m, Netcare has grown organically and by acquisition to become the giant of the private health-care industry, owning a third of the total private hospital bed capacity. It has parlayed its core competence into providing health-care management facilities for third parties, at home and abroad. A rare setback is the overambitious expansion of its Traumanet, or Netcare 911, service, but Netcare says it is sorting this out. Through Netpartner it hopes to extend private health care to groups previously unable to afford it and it is included in the first 51 companies forming the JSE's social responsibility index.
