SA's second-biggest gold mining group has done a good job in getting rid of marginal properties. And , by selling a 15% interest in its SA assets to Mvelaphanda at a market-related price, it has met the ownership requirement of the mining charter with a credible partner and minimum risk. Roughly 30% of output and earnings is now derived outside SA and the company is looking for more offshore projects. What interests investors most at the moment, though, is the development of its relationship with its new shareholder, Russia's Norilsk, which recently acquired Anglo American's 20% stake.
