It was always an anomaly for Afrox - local arm of the worldwide BOC industrial gases group - to be involved in running private hospitals, and Afrox Healthcare is by a comfortable margin the smallest of the three listed private hospital groups. Nevertheless, it has been an industry leader and a lucrative diversification for Afrox. It will be missed when it is delisted in terms of Afrox's proposed sale of the company to a black empowerment consortium backed by larger rival Medi-Clinic (in turn controlled by the Rupert family's Remgro holding company) and Tokyo Sexwale's Mvelaphanda.
