2 SASOL

Total score: 59,6 Historic score: 25 FM's score: 83

Sasol's record and reputation rests on its consistency, depth of management and capacity for innovation. A New York listing this year was probably the high point in the company's corporate history. Along the path from parastatal to blue chip, Sasol has reinvented itself into a global business that has delivered to shareholders for 23 years. The industry is certainly profitable, though Sasol will face the strong rand and tight margins on its newly acquired European chemical business in the short term. However, Sasol's long-term growth should be supported by intensive investments in its gas-to-liquid ventures and the petrochemical sector. In 53 years, management hasn't got expansion wrong.
