You can't get more bricks-and-mortar than this. While investors got carried away with dot-com fantasies, Ceramic Industries was quietly growing earnings while enjoying SA's construction boom and new love affair with tiles over other floor coverings. Now Ceramic's factories just can't make enough of them. Add sanitaryware to the mix and it's clear that Ceramic has built a neat market space to dominate. But it's still not satisfied. Expansion is on the agenda in Australia, after an aborted attempt in Italy (coals to Newcastle?). A strong rand may help offshore growth, but not domestic margins, which feel the pressure of foreign competitors.
